Quick answer

Which Bangkok airport do I need?

Bangkok has two major passenger airports: Suvarnabhumi (BKK) east of the city and Don Mueang (DMK) to the north. Both handle international and domestic flights. The Thai Limo offers private airport and hotel transfers, including connections between BKK and DMK, with all-inclusive flat rates and English-speaking support.

The airport code on each flight segment is the clearest way to tell which airport you will use.

Where are BKK and DMK?

Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) is east of Bangkok. Expressways connect it with the city's main hotel areas, including Sukhumvit, Siam, Silom, Sathorn and the Chao Phraya riverside. Road travel is usually easier outside the busiest commuting periods, while the Airport Rail Link offers another way into the city.

Don Mueang Airport (DMK) is north of Bangkok, closer to northern districts such as Chatuchak and Ari. Travelling farther south to Asok, Sathorn or the Old Town means continuing through more of the city. Neither airport is in central Bangkok, so allow time for the onward journey after landing.

Is one airport international and the other domestic?

Both airports handle international and domestic flights. BKK is Bangkok's larger international hub; DMK is widely used for domestic and regional journeys. The airport you use depends on your airline and route.

What to expect when arriving at Suvarnabhumi

International arrivals pass through immigration, baggage reclaim and customs before entering the public arrivals hall on Level 2. Domestic arrivals have a shorter formalities process, although baggage delivery still takes time.

Some flights arrive at SAT-1, the satellite concourse connected to the main terminal by an automated people mover. Follow the Arrivals signs to continue into the main terminal. Airport transport and the public meeting areas are reached after this connection.

The Airport Rail Link station is on Level B1. Taxis and prearranged private transfers are other options for continuing to your hotel. A direct car journey is particularly convenient after a long flight or when travelling with children and several suitcases.

See the Suvarnabhumi airport transfer guide for The Thai Limo's meeting instructions and arrival services.

What to expect when arriving at Don Mueang

Terminal 1 handles international flights and Terminal 2 handles domestic flights. International passengers complete immigration and customs; domestic passengers continue through baggage collection toward the public arrivals area.

For a short domestic flight, Don Mueang can feel like a relatively straightforward arrival. Your onward journey depends on which part of Bangkok you are visiting: northern neighbourhoods are nearer, while central business districts and riverside hotels require a longer city journey.

Our Don Mueang airport transfer page has the detailed private-pickup instructions for both terminals.

Connecting between BKK and DMK

A connection between BKK and DMK involves leaving one airport and travelling to the other. There is no airside corridor between them. A typical self-transfer includes arrival formalities, baggage collection, the cross-city journey and check-in for your next flight.

The road journey is roughly 45–50 km, commonly around 45–90 minutes, with longer possible in heavy traffic. That is driving time only; it does not include immigration, baggage reclaim or the next airline's check-in requirements.

How much connection time should you allow?

Think of the connection as several parts:

  1. Leaving your first flight and completing arrival formalities.
  2. Collecting baggage and reaching onward transport.
  3. Travelling across Bangkok.
  4. Checking in, dropping bags and completing departure procedures.
  5. A buffer for queues, road traffic or an arriving flight delay.

An overnight stay or a later onward flight can make a short connection much more comfortable. For separate tickets, check each airline's baggage and check-in rules before choosing the flights.

Is there a free airport shuttle?

An airport-to-airport shuttle is available for eligible connecting passengers with onward travel evidence. AOT lists the BKK boarding point at Level 2, Gate 3. Check the current timetable and eligibility on the official airport transport page.

A private BKK–DMK transfer offers a vehicle reserved for your party, which can be convenient for families, groups and luggage-heavy journeys.

Train, taxi or private transfer?

OptionWhen it can work wellThings to consider
Airport rail and city connectionsTravelling light and staying near a suitable stationInterchanges and the final journey from the station
Airport taxiA direct journey arranged after arrivalQueues, vehicle space and the complete fare
Prebooked private transferFamilies, groups, late arrivals or a comfortable direct hotel journeyChoose a vehicle with enough room for both passengers and bags
Airport shuttle between BKK and DMKEligible connecting passengers with enough timeCurrent operating hours, eligibility and the next flight's check-in deadline

For road travel, compare the complete journey cost, including applicable tolls and airport charges. For rail, consider how comfortably you can manage your bags through stations and interchanges.

Which Bangkok area suits your stay?

Sukhumvit, Asok and Phrom Phong are popular bases for restaurants, shopping and access to the city's rail network. Accommodation ranges from large hotels along Sukhumvit Road to quieter stays on the surrounding sois, including Sukhumvit Soi 11.

Thonglor and Ekkamai suit visitors who want restaurants, cafés and a more residential side of the city alongside their sightseeing.

Silom and Sathorn combine business travel with dining and access to central Bangkok. They are useful bases for a working visit with time to explore between appointments.

Siam and Ratchaprasong put shopping and major hotel districts at the centre of your stay.

The Riverside, including Charoen Krung and Charoen Nakhon, suits travellers drawn to river views, waterfront hotels and journeys along the Chao Phraya. Hotels are spread along both banks.

The Old Town and Khao San area are useful for visitors interested in Bangkok's historic sights and the atmosphere around its older neighbourhoods.

Arriving late or staying for one night

For a late arrival, a direct transfer can help you settle into your hotel without additional connections. If you plan to use rail or a shuttle, check its operating hours against your flight arrival rather than assuming it runs all night.

For an overnight connection, staying near the airport you depart from can reduce cross-city travel the following morning. If you have longer in Bangkok, a central hotel gives you more opportunity for a meal, shopping or sightseeing before your next journey.

Frequently asked questions

Is BKK the same airport as DMK?

No. BKK is Suvarnabhumi, east of Bangkok; DMK is Don Mueang, north of the city. Check the airport code on every flight segment.

Which Bangkok airport is better?

The better choice depends on your flights, connections and where you are staying. BKK is a major international hub; DMK serves many domestic and regional routes. Convenient flight times and a comfortable connection often matter more than the airport name.

How long does a BKK-to-DMK transfer take?

Allow roughly 45–90 minutes for driving, with longer possible in congestion. Add arrival formalities, baggage collection and the onward airline's check-in time separately.

Can I connect between BKK and DMK without collecting my bags?

For a typical self-transfer, you collect and recheck your baggage. Check with your airline about the arrangements for your particular ticket before travelling.

Where do I meet my driver at BKK?

The Thai Limo's standard meeting point is on Level 2, on the pavement opposite Door 7. Use the marked crossing after completing arrival formalities, and follow any updated instructions in your confirmation.

What if my flight lands at SAT-1?

Follow Arrivals signs and the automated people mover connection to the main terminal, then continue through the arrival process. Public transport and private-transfer meeting points are reached from the main terminal.

Which Don Mueang terminal handles domestic flights?

Terminal 2 handles domestic flights and Terminal 1 handles international flights. Your ticket and airline provide the current flight details.

Is rail a good choice with luggage?

It can be convenient with manageable bags and a hotel near a suitable station. Families with strollers or several large cases may find a direct car journey easier.

Can I travel from a Bangkok airport directly to Pattaya or Laem Chabang?

Yes. Both are separate intercity journeys beyond Bangkok, so allow for the longer road journey when planning your arrival day or a cruise connection.

Are private airport transfers available for late-night flights?

The Thai Limo arranges private arrivals for late-night and early-morning flights, with an agreed flat rate and English-speaking support available 24/7.
